12C - Case Study HW

X Factor
How do audiences access texts across the three platforms?
Audiences access texts across the three platforms by e-media which is stating their opinions online and voting who should be voted out or their favourite singer (X Factor), print which is stating their opinions on TV magazines and gossip magazines and finally broadcasting which is talking to the judges on X Factor such as Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cola by using a internet software called skype.  By giving the audience a chance to interact with the X Factor judges means that more audiences will then be attracted to the show due to being able to speak to the X Factor judges as some audiences may enjoy speaking to the judges, other audiences may want to argue with the judges which means that the other type of audience will be amused and entertained to see what other people have to say about the judges, as well as the contestants for example Matt Cardle X Factors latest winner.
What institutional issues are raised by the topic areas?
There is a change in the technology due to being able to watch the X Factor online as well as in high definition which means customers and audiences will be able to have value for money due to paying for the high definition services which means that the audiences and customers will want to watch their favourite programs in high definition such as X Factor.  So by having X Factor in High Definition means that more people may be more satisfied when watching X factor due to paying for the High Definition services.  Also due to the increase in the technology means that more customers will then be able to watch X Factor as well as finding out the latest gossip and information on the contestants as well as the judges.  This can all be found on applications such as on the i phone 4 and apple products as well as on the internet due to people unable to watch it broadcasting live so they will then be able to catch up online or on the go due to the applications.

Powerpoint Presentation - WWW & EBI

What Went Well – (WWW)
·         Talking about the trailer in full depth stating the genres involved, in this case it would be Horror and Drama which are the main two Genres involved which makes it a Hybrid Genre
·         Talking and stating the audience and age groups which are eligible to watch this film due to the violence
·         Giving examples of different films which are similar to our film  and in this case it was Jennifer’s body
Even Better If – (EBI)
·         We stuck to one age rating which would be 18 instead of 15 in order to appeal to a wider audience as well as have more violence and bloody scenes involved.
·         We stick to two genres instead of four genres as that will make the film seem more confusing towards the audience
·         Adding a variety of different trailers and not focusing on just one trailer which is Jennifer’s body as this may confuse us a group as well as the audience due to having similar scenes to Jennifer’s body, so by using more trailers will give us a better idea on what to use in different scenes etc.

Hybrid Genres

Hybrid Theory’s
Hybrid Theory’s which can also be referred to as cross media due to two different genres merging together for example a horror genre and a action genre combining together this means that there will be horror scenes available in the film as well as action scenes this could attract more people to watch a film due to having two genres in one film.  This could also mean more value for money due to two genres in one film as mainly you may only be getting one genre i.e. a comedy genre etc.  Hybrid Theory’s has been said to be the future of marketing as well as socialising due to being able to communicate to the audience in various amount of ways by speaking as well as actions made in movies.  This has also been said to be more exciting and creative when watching films due to having more involvement in the film instead of just one genre involved.
Examples of Hybrid Genres
·         Romantic Comedy – Genres involved – Romance and Comedy
·         Comedy drama – Genres involved – Comedy and Drama
·         Action Comedy – Genres involved – Action and Comedy
·         Romantic Fantasy – Genres involved – Romantic and Fantasy
·         Horror drama – Genres involved – Horror and drama
This relates well to the Hybrid Genre we are doing as a group, due to having Horror and ‘teen’ drama involved throughout our trailer.  As in our film production the teenager in the film is always having high school problems such as getting abused and picked on by other kids this relates to the drama part of the film.  As the horror genre is involved when the teenager starts to take revenge on all her culprits such as the people who bully and abused her so this means that death and blood is then involved.

London to Brighton

Media Forms- how does the trailer use media language to establish the films genre?

The trailer uses media language to establish the films genre by using different types of music to connote suspense and tension to the audience throughout the trailer.  Such as the music at the beginning starts slow by using a piano which relates to the 12 year old girl in order to show how confused and innocent she is.  The music then suddenly changes as it becomes faster tempo which creates a more violent image towards the audience this could show that something bad is going to happen, the sound effect which has been used here is contrapuntal sound due to the music changing instantly.  Also at the end of the film there is a gunshot which creates a dramatic ending to the trailer and gives the audience an idea that something bad is going to happen.  This shows that the music used within the trailer relates to the thriller and drama genre.  There is also vast amount of camera framings in the trailer especially close up shots in order to see the different characters expressions throughout the trailer in order to create emotions, tension and suspense towards the audience.  There is also vast amount of effects throughout the trailer such as quick cuts and blurred effects which creates confusion and excitement throughout the trailer which associates well with the drama genre.  In one particular scene there is a lot of drama created due to the camera framing as well as the characters as a wide shot has been used to show the relationship between the females and the male this connotes that the males are the dominant ones, due to being in front, wearing expensive and smart props and leading the two females into a room.

Media Representations- How is gender represented in the film?

Gender is represented in the trailer as it shows the females are the weaker sex firstly as they are younger and have no money so there intentions are to follow the dominant sex due to having a nice house and having power, money and respect.  Gender is also represented in the trailer as the females are degraded in the trailer due to having cheap props on, bruised bodies and faces and by being an prostitute.  This shows that the females will do anything for money in order to survive.  They are also the weakest sex due to running away from the males instead of confronting them due to the males having guns and being constantly rude and aggressive towards the females.  By the females running away connotes to the audience that they are scared, frightened and confused and they want to stop getting abused and sold for sex to old men.

Twilight: New Moon

Media Language: What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?

The techniques used in this trailer to persuade the audience to see the film is the dramatic music used throughout the trailer as this attracts the audience’s attention as the classical music used interacts well with certain scenes in the trailer such as when Edward is fighting against voltorie which are represented as the highest and most strongest vampires, due to the trailer stating that they can kill Edward and Bella etc.  Another technique used to attract and persuade the audience to watch the film is the love between three main characters which are Edward (Vampire), Jacob (Wolf) and finally Bella the attracted human female due to Jacob fighting to win Bella over from Edward due to Edward leaving Bella which means that the audience will want to know firstly whether Jacob will win Bella over or not and secondly would Edward come back to save Bella from Jacob, so the trailer has a cliff-hanger and leaves a question to the audience due to not knowing what will happen between Edward, Bella and Jacob. Another technique used is the various amount of camera angles used such as when focusing just on the characters facial expressions this informs the audience about how each character is feeling, which attracts to the audience well as they will then be able to feel how each character is feeling in order to understand the film more clearer. Also there is non-diegetic used at the beginning of the trailer, in order to inform the audience about the film and also about the characters in order for the audience not to be confused about the trailer, this is a good technique to use as by the audience understanding the trailer more means that they are more likely to watch the actual film production.

Representation: How is gender represented in the trailer?

Gender is represented in the trailer as there are three main characters 2 dominant characters which are the male characters Edward and Jacob and the alternative character which is the female character Bella. The gender is represented in two different ways as the humans such as Bella is the alternative character due to not having more power and control than the vampires and wolfs such as Edward and Jacob which means Bella is most likely to listen to one of the two dominant characters and in this case she mainly listens to Edward due to the love she has for him on the other hand she has different feelings towards Jacob.  This informs the audience about who Bella is going for and the situation between these three main protagonists. Gender is also represented in the trailer in another way due to there being females in the voltorie which means that the non human beings have more power, strength and respect.  Also when there are violent scenes in the trailer you are able to firstly notice that the dominant males are much taller than Bella and the humans as well as both having big muscular bodies which represent to the audience that they have power and strength.   You are also able to notice in the trailer that whenever Edward is speaking to the higher class vampires she is always behind Edward which confirms to the audience that she listens and sticks by Edward due to always being safe around him, which shows that Bella is a normal human female always looking up to the male dominants.

Audience: What target audience would be attracted to this film?

The target audience that would be attracted to this film would be starting from teenagers at the age of 15 to 30 year olds, and would be for both males and females due to the film being a romantic film as well as being a violent film due to having fighting scenes involved which means that males will then get attracted to the film due to this.  But more females will be more attracted to this film than males due to being a more romantic film instead of various amount of fighting scenes.  Also it will attract to females more due to being able to see two muscular dominants fighting over one girl and her love which is Bella which means that the female audience will get attracted to the handsome muscular males in the film due to being able to see their body in specific scenes. If relating this film to a specific social class I would say it will be mainly students and working class people from the classes of B to E as teachers may also be attracted to the film due to reading books as this may mean that they will want to watch the film as well as reading the book etc.

Institutions: What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer?

The Hollywood values which I can identify in this trailer would be firstly the vehicles used in the film such as yellow Porsche cars and 4x4 Volvo cars which are very expensive cars this shows that the producers have vast amount of money to be used.  Secondly the locations used in the film are set in different countries which means that money was then used for transportation as well as hiring out specific areas in order to create the film. Also by having popular celebrities and actors in the film shows that it is an Hollywood movie as these characters only film Hollywood movies as they are high budget films instead of Bollywood and low budget films as certain characters will then not get a lot of money for their performance in their film instead of in an Hollywood movie. Finally by the location already being set in America shows that the film is an Hollywood movie.

Bad Boys 2 Trailer

Bad Boys 2 is an action film firstly due to the fast expensive sport cars used, explosions made and finally due to having violence involved throughout the film.  This then indicates well with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence image and props due to playing as cops throughout the film.  There is vast amount of editing used throughout the trailer such as fast templ music which relates to the quick cuts used in the trailer in order to create tension and suspense for the audience.  There is a lot of straight cuts used throughout the trailer, in order to show more clips to the audience in order for them to get a rough idea about the film.  By using straight cuts could also be referred to as being a cliffhanger as in the trailer there are quick straight cuts involved which keeps the audiences attention as by seeing a one second cut does not give enough information towards the audience which means they will want to know what happens next.  There are also scenes which continue without no cuts and effects which can inform the audience a bit more about the film as well as make it run more smoothly.

The mise en scene is set in different locations as there are scenes where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are in the police station and there are also scenes in the trailer where they are fighting and shooting when outdoors as well as indoors.  This connotes to the audience that there are many action scenes throughout the film due to also seeing many explosions and damaged vehicles which could create a lot of excitement towards the audience as they will want to know what happens next and if Will Smith and Martin lawrence catch the bad guys, and drug dealers or related to as so called 'gangsters'.  There are a lot of props used throughout the trailer such as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence dressing up as cops as well as wearing normal clothes which could connote to the audience that they are playing as undercover cops in order to catch the drug dealers.  When Will Smith is not dressed up as a cop you then are able to see a high status such as having expensive clothes due to wearing designer sunglasses as well as his ferrari sports car which is seen throughout the movie.  this then connotes to the audeince that this is a hollywood movie due to being located in Miami as well as their high status such as expensive sports cars, big houses etc.  There are a number of facial expressions used to connote to the audience how Will Smith and Martin Lawrence feel in different situations such as when they are fighting and shooting the bad guys and the expressions used are very concentrated on their target as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence want to defeat their enemys, which then creates a lot of tension towards the audience as they will be able to understand more clearly about the situations there in and how serious it is.  The lighting used is chnaged throughout the trailer as when they are indoors it is normally dark which creates a lot of tension as well as enigma codes towards the audience as it s eems very mysterious.  By having dark colours used creates a more evil and death scene as black is normally related to death and being evil etc.  There is back lighting used in some scenes where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence looking twice as big due to their shadow as this makes the bad guys seem more afraid and frightened when seeing the larger shadows of the cops, this shows that the cops have a higher status and also has more power than the bad guys.  This creates a lot of tension towards the audience due to seeing the larger shadows as they will want to know how they defeated them or killed them.

When cops are shown there is always a low angle shot used which means that the audience is always looking up towards the cops making them seem as if they have more power than the audience as well as the bad guys.  There are close up shots used when Will Smith is shooting the bad guys which is just focusing on his face in order to interact well with the audience, in order to show how serious the actors are.  There is tracking movement involved when Will Smith is driving his sports car at high speeds in order to keep up with his momentum.  Tracking movement is used in order to follow all his moves made.  This then makes the audience know how quick Will Smith is driving and also gives them a clearer image of the car as well as the scenery.  There is non-digetic sound used throughout the trailer as there is music played over the production in order to show another side to the film which could be a comedy film due to the funny comments said by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, this then can relate to the audience as they would have a different perspective to the film as they will also enjoy the film as well as being attracted to the action scenes.

Cinematography

1.  Choose two extracts from different eras and analyse the cinematography?

The cinematography which has been used in this trailer is camera framing such as medium and close up shots.  This was used whenever filming the godfather himself such as showing his facial expressions towards the audience in order to feel how he is feeling, which gives the audience an idea about the tension and suspense in the film. Medium shots were used as you hardly ever saw his whole body instead you just saw above his waist line.  Also the background was quite dark which connotes enigma codes reason being as black is an evil and damp colour this could mean that something bad may happen in a particular scene. There is also long shots used in the trailer when the godfather is dancing with his partner in order to show of his body posture as well as his props, which then relates to his high status, due to having a posh event and having many people dressed smartly.

This is a still image from the film Avatar,  The camera framing in this picture is a close up due to just seeing their faces which creates a romantic scene due to both the characters close to each other.  It also seems as if there is a low camera angle due to looking up on the two characters.

This still image is from the film Halloween, and this appears to be a medium shot due to not being able to see his legs also it seems to be a low angle shot in order to create suspense and tension towards the audience due to looking up at the character which shows he is the dominant sex. Also by doing a low angle shot shows that he has more power and strength. This could also be a point of view shot due to just focusing on one character.

This still image is from the film Bad Santa and this is a medium shot which has been taking from the characters side view.  This shows more of the background which then gives the audience an idea of where the two characters are.  Also by doing a medium shot shows more of their body and props towards the audience as well as there facial expressions in order to give the audience an idea of what could happen next.

This is a still image from the film Saw,  and as you can see the camera framing used in this still image is a close up in order to see the actors facial expression which creates a lot of tension and suspense towards the audience.  Also this is a point of view shot due to focusing just on the characters face.  The background and the objects used in this picture shows that the character is in trouble due to mainly his facial expression which connotes enigma codes.
